What are the guidelines for treating nausea and vomiting in pregnancy

Pregnancy is a fantastic journey, but for many women, it comes with its own challenges. One of the most common symptoms of pregnancy is nausea and vomiting, often referred to as morning sickness. While it can be stressful, there are effective ways to manage and reduce these symptoms.

What is the definition of nausea and vomiting?

Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy are frequently experienced symptoms that typically start in the first trimester. The exact cause of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is not completely understood, but hormonal changes, especially an increase in estrogen levels, are thought to play a significant role. However, there are ways to manage and relieve these symptoms. Here are some effective ways to deal with morning sickness:

Eat small meals and eat frequently:

Avoid eating three large meals and try to eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. An empty stomach can make nausea more severe, so keeping your stomach a little full can help reduce symptoms.

Choose bland, easily digestible foods:

In early pregnancy, select foods that are easy on your stomach, such as plain crackers, toast, rice, or broth soups. In pregnancy avoid spicy, fatty, or highly flavorful foods that can cause nausea.

Stay hydrated:

It is important to stay hydrated throughout pregnancy, especially if you feel nauseous. Drink liquids throughout the day and try ginger ale, herbal teas, or clear liquids such as water or electrolyte drinks.

Avoid triggers:

Some smells, tastes, or textures can trigger nausea. Identify the things that make your symptoms feel worse and try to avoid them. During pregnancy, open your windows for fresh air, use fragrance-free personal care products, and make a note of any specific foods or drinks that appear to make your feelings worse.

Try ginger:

Ginger has been used for many years as a remedy for nausea. You can take ginger in different forms, such as ginger tea, ginger ale, ginger sweets, or ginger supplements. However, it’s always a good idea to talk to your healthcare provider before taking any supplements during pregnancy.

Severe Cases: When to Seek Medical Attention

Hyperemesis gravidarum (morning sickness):

A condition known as hyperemesis gravidarum or morning sickness caused by severe vomiting, dehydration and weight loss, may develop in severe cases of NVP.

Risk of getting dehydrated:

Dehydration poses a very serious risk to both mother and baby and needs to be treated immediately if symptoms worsen.
